The City of Hildesheim is located in Lower-Saxony, northern Germany, and has about 103.000 inhabitants. Hildesheim is an impressive combination of the traditional and the modern with excellent quality of life and unmistakable flair. In addition to a wide range of cultural and historical tourist attractions, including the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites at St. Mary´s Cathedral with the 1000-year-old rosebush and St. Michael´s Church, along with the historically reconstructed market square, the city also offers an appealing living environment, attractive surroundings and a very manifold cultural landscape.

Hildesheim is home to a foundation university and two colleges with a total of about 8,000 students. The University of Hildesheim focuses on the academic fields of education (teachers college for primary and lower secondary schools), cultural sciences and information and communication sciences. Some of these courses of study are unique in Germany. The University of Applied Sciences and Art (HAWK) - Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen offers courses of study in architecture, civil-engineering, graphic-design, colour-design, historical cultural heritage, restoration, medically-related professions and social work that enjoy an excellent reputation throughout Germany and internationally.

The City of Hildesheim keeps seven twinnings in Europe, Africa, Asia and Russia. One of Hildesheim´s twin-towns is Pavia. The twinning was signed in 2000 and is characterized by exchanges of different groups (pupils, choirs, sports-teams etc.).
